The active owners of this West Des Moines, Iowa home regularly balance a busy work schedule with their kids' extracurricular activities. They also love to entertain and frequently host family and friends. As such, the homeowners' 20-year-old kitchen was not conducive to their needs, and the space was in desparate need of a makeover in order to fit their frenetic lifestyle.
To update the space without starting from scratch, the homeowners contracted designer Peter Gersdorf and his design assistant Corey Gersdorf of AIM Kitchen and Bath. The designers' task was to keep the existing bulkheads and wallpaper and add counter space, lighting and modern applicanes. The homeowners also desired to keep the original oak woodwork.
The most difficult part of the challenge was to devise a design that would fit within the home and would complement the existing oak woodwork. The design team achieved this by incorporating cabinet molding and crown to match the oak. The most notable custom features include a curved bar top with matching crown molding, a bulkhead located above the island and undercabinet, a unique tile floor and a stunning backsplash. As a finishing touch, Gersdorf installed high-end appliances guaranteed to alleviate any unnecessary tasks and provide the busy couple with time for entertaining.
